Assemblymember Watts recognized as "Most Civil Libertarian Legislator" by ACLU
The ACLU of Nevada released its legislative report card for the turbulent 2021 session, grading the performance of state legislators amidst unprecedented challenges. The session was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest, and significant legislative decisions made under heightened secrecy.
Assemblyman Howard Watts (D-Clark County) stood out as the "Most Civil Libertarian Legislator," aligning with the ACLU on 100% of the issues tracked. Watts was notably the only Democrat in both chambers to oppose Senate Bill 77, which exempts certain meetings related to the National Environmental Policy Act from Nevada's Open Meeting Law, highlighting his commitment to transparency and civil liberties.
The ACLU's report card praised the Nevada Legislature for its overall performance, with both chambers receiving a grade equivalent to a "B." The report commended efforts in decriminalizing traffic offenses, expanding voting rights, and advocating for civil liberties across a broad spectrum of issues.
Assemblyman Watts is the first legislator in the history of the organization's scorecard to earn a perfect score of 100%.
