Nevada Considers Joining Compact for National Popular Vote

Nevada is contemplating joining the National Popular Vote compact, a move away from the electoral college's "winner-take-all" system to elect the president based on the national popular vote. Assembly Joint Resolution 6 (AJR6), championed by Assemblyman Howard Watts, aims to ensure every vote has equal weight in presidential elections. Currently, 15 states and the District of Columbia, totaling 195 electoral votes, are part of the compact. Nevada's addition would contribute six electoral votes, increasing the total to 201. The compact requires enough states to total 270 electoral votes to take effect, potentially by the 2028 election cycle. Critics argue it could diminish Nevada's political relevance, but supporters believe it will make every vote count equally nationwide.
